Methadone, Buprenorphine, and Clonidine Attenuate Mitragynine Withdrawal in Rats

Kratom is a plant that some people use to help with pain and opioid withdrawal. However, kratom can also cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms. Mitragynine is the main active ingredient in kratom.

This study looked at whether three drugs – methadone, buprenorphine, and clonidine – could help reduce withdrawal symptoms in rats that were given chronic doses of mitragynine. The researchers found that all three drugs were able to significantly reduce the withdrawal symptoms in the rats. This suggests that these drugs could potentially be used to help people who are addicted to kratom and are trying to quit.

Key takeaways:

  • Chronic mitragynine treatment caused withdrawal symptoms in rats.
  • Methadone, buprenorphine, and clonidine were able to reduce these withdrawal symptoms.
  • These drugs may be potential treatment options for kratom/mitragynine addiction in humans.
