7-Hydroxymitragynine Causes Respiratory Depression Like Morphine; Mitragynine Does Not

Why it matters

Despite kratom's growing use as an opioid alternative, the respiratory safety profiles of its key alkaloids have remained poorly understood. Manufacturers now market 7-HMG products at 14-25 mg per serving with purity as high as 98%—far exceeding naturally occurring levels in kratom leaves (typically <0.1%). This University of Florida study provides the first comprehensive comparison of respiratory effects between mitragynine (MG) and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG) in awake rats, with and without naloxone reversal.
