New Preprint Tests Why Kratom Plants Evolve Opioid-Like Compounds

The big picture
The herbivore defense hypothesis — that psychoactive plant compounds evolved to deter insect predators — has been widely cited in botanical pharmacology but rarely tested directly with kratom. This East Tennessee State University preprint is among the first controlled experiments on the question. Results show kratom leaf does kill insects, but not through the same opioid receptor pathway responsible for its human effects, since insects lack μ-opioid receptors entirely.
