Kratom Compound Mitragynine Plus Naltrexone Cuts Alcohol Consumption More Than Either Drug Alone in Animal Study

Why it matters
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains one of the most treatment-resistant conditions in medicine, with existing FDA-approved therapies working poorly for many patients. This first-of-its-kind rat study suggests that combining the kratom alkaloid mitragynine with naltrexone may open a new treatment avenue — one that outperforms either drug alone.
The big picture
Naltrexone, a mu-opioid antagonist already FDA-approved for AUD, reduces alcohol craving but has limited efficacy and poor compliance in many patients. Mitragynine, kratom primary alkaloid, has shown preliminary effects on alcohol consumption in animal models, but its mechanism remains debated. This University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine study is the first to directly test the combination in female rats, a population underrepresented in AUD pharmacology research.
