Meanwhile, commercial 7-OH products are still on shelves across Texas, and overdoses involving the compound are being systematically undercounted because standard toxicology panels are not designed to detect it.

"Right now, we just don't have the tools to enforce these regulations other than whatever is written on the packaging, which is highly suspect," said Joy Alonzo, PharmD, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy. She added: "There is no established medical use or evidence-based safe dose" for 7-OH.
